The Mirror told last month how a couple were hospitalized with serious injuries after being hit by a car while crossing a road — but police punished them for the incident.
The couple, a 62-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman who haven't been named, were struck by a vehicle in Hackensack, New Jersey, around 10 miles west of New York City, on Wednesday. The driver reportedly stopped and spoke with police officers at the scene.
In the meantime, the couple were rushed to hospital to be treated for their injuries, but have since been slapped with a fine over the accident. Police issued them a ticket for jaywalking, the law that prevents individuals from crossing roads anywhere but on a pedestrian crossing.
The driver of the vehicle stopped after striking the pedestrians, which happened at 7.15pm and talked with police. The man and woman were both taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for urgent medical treatment, RLS Media reported. Their current condition is not clear.
Police are investigating what caused the crash but have already concluded that the couple crossed the street when they weren't supposed to - thus meriting the usual fine for jaywalking. Police urged people to obey laws when it comes to crossing roads for their own safety as they noted the large number of injuries in New Jersey.
