Nestled in the heart of the Baltic region Lithuania is relatively untouched and is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. Lithuania has an otherworldly quality - it has charming rolling hills, crystal-clear lakes, and not to mention an array of incredible historical sites.

It is the largest of the three Baltic states and is home to less than three million residents. This hidden treasure is often bypassed by tourists in favour of more renowned European destinations, but it is quietly carving out a reputation as an unexplored paradise with a wealth of attractions. In fact, Lonely Planet places the country within its Best in Travel which features their top cities and regions across the world.

The well travelled Lonely Planet team believe there’s never been a better time to explore Lithuania’s incredible protected forests, lakes and sandy dunes along the Baltic Sea.

Vilnius is Lithuania’s capital and largest city. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is a hidden gem jam-packed with culture and history and has a lively social scene.

Green space covers 61% of this picturesque city and it is also home to the unmissable Sapieha Palace - a significant monument of architecture, art, and history in the heart of the capital.

Vilnius is one of the few European capitals where hot air balloon flights are allowed and has quickly become a symbol of the city.

No visit to Lithuania would be complete without exploring the Curonian Spit - a 60-mile thin, curved stretch of land that looks like a belt across the Baltic Sea.

Dominated by long stretches of pristine silver beaches, the Spit was formed by the sea, wind and human activity and is a wonder to explore.

Just three hours away from the UK, Lithuania is a brilliant low-cost destination. A pint of beer can be as low as £2.60, while a bottle of wine costs just over fiver, at £5.20.

The cheapest month to book is November, with average hotel rates of just £42 per night.
