LTA Banks on Cameras, Speed Humps to Curb Speeding

Three portable speed cameras will be allocated to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) personnel in Vanua Levu to address speeding problems.

LTA chief operating officer Faiyum Ali said speeding was one of the major causes of roads accidents in Fiji.

“We do understand new and high-tech vehicles coming to Fiji and what LTA has done is that it has installed permanent fixed cameras in Suva and Western Division including red light and speed cameras,” Mr Ali said.

“We haven’t forgotten about the Northern Division and to create a more effective way to deal with speeding we have taken this proactive approach.”

He said LTA had signed a contract and the vendor to get 12 portable speed cameras and three would be sent to Vanua Levu.

“It’s going to be a 24-hour day and night operation and it will also be used at different check points,” he said.

“This is a more transparent system compared to the manual radar because it would provide information of those over speeding and Traffic Infringement Notice will be issued whether you are a police or LTA officer.”

He said once this was brought into effect, LTA believes there would be an increase in compliance level.

While this was progressing, he added that Fiji Roads Authority was looking into having a road hump at strategic locations to help drivers reduce speed.
