The employment working group under India’s G20 presidency has reached a broad agreement on the draft ministerial communique and outcome documents, paving the way for cross-country mobility of workers and extension of the Skills for Jobs Database to G20 countries to map skill gaps globally, the labour ministry said on Friday.

The agreement was reached at the third meeting of the employment working group, under labour secretary Arti Ahuja, which concluded at the headquarters of the International Labour Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland.

“The G20 employment working group's third meeting crossed a major milestone towards building consensus on the outcomes of the three key priority areas for EWG 2023 under the Indian presidency,” the labour ministry said in a statement.

These include development of an international reference classification of occupations by skill and qualification requirements to facilitate cross-country comparability and mutual recognition of skills and qualifications.

Further, it has been agreed to extend coverage of ILO and OECD's Skills for Jobs Database to G20 countries through comparable indicators to map skill gaps globally, it said.

“The agreement also included commitments by the G20 countries to work towards providing adequate social protection for all including gig and platform workers and ensure sustainable financing of social protection,” the labour ministry said.

According to the statement, prior to the agenda discussions were held between all member countries on progress on Antalya and Brisbane targets by the International Labour Organisation and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

“It emerged from the update that significant progress has been made in achieving the goals. However, countries need to accelerate their efforts in order to meet the goals,” the ministry said.

The fourth and final meeting of the employment working group and the labour and employment ministers of all G20 countries will be held in July at Indore.
