Wolverhampton Wanderers were among the clubs interested in Sutton Coldfield born midfielder Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, it has emerged.

Wanderers' interest came in April when it was believed that he was on his way to the Premier League for a £5m fee, according to Sport Witness.

Johannesson is the son of former Iceland international, Johanes Gudjonsson and had been representing Swedish side Norrkoping since 2019.

He made 44 appearances, contributing with five goals.

The 18-year-old drew attention from Premier League sides such as Liverpool and top clubs across Europe for a year, before leaving the Swedish outfit for a move to Denmark, joining Copenhagen on deadline day.

The teenager signed a five-year contract with the Danish side after deciding to snub interest from elsewhere, including that of Wolves.

Swedish transfer expert Daniel Kristoffersson admitted to feeling puzzled with the move.

“It was a shock. A transfer bomb, as they say," Kristoffersson told BT in Denmark.

“It was a big surprise because everyone thought he was going to a bigger club. For example, there has been interest from Wolverhampton in the Premier League and Red Bull Salzburg."

The expert revealed that the transfer took shape late in the window after Norrkoping had claimed, the 18-year-old would not be sold.

He continued: “It was a big surprise that it happened on the last day. It went very quickly.

"When the team had another coach last year, he was one of the best in the Allsvenskan. Everyone thought he would be sold for 7-10 million and become the most expensive ever sold from the Swedish league.”
