Rutgers DL target Khris Banks could take his decision beyond early signing day

Coming off Khris Banks' official visit to Rutgers, Banks still sees his recruitment as a two-team race between Rutgers and Temple.

And although there's a chance he will decide between the two programs by the early signing period, there's also a chance he'll take things all the way to February - which wouldn't be the biggest of deals as he has no plans to enroll early.

"I was going to sign Wednesday, but as of right now, I have to talk to my family about that," the 6-3, 295-pound DePaul (Wayne, N.J.) senior two-way tackle said following his Rutgers trek.

Luckily, the Rutgers staff isn't in a rush to secure Banks' pledge, despite wanting him. Badly.

"Coach Ash told me to just take my time. He wanted me to make sure I'm making the right decision. Just talk it over, don't rush anything," Banks said. "They have never pressured me to commit on the spot or anything like that. That's what I really like. They don't bug me about committing. They understand that I'm a kid, and they want me to enjoy the process of being a high-level recruit and have fun."

Either way, the Knights appear to have helped themselves over the weekend.

"It was good," said Banks, who was accompanied on the visit by his father, Lenny, and hosted by sophomore DB K.J. Gray. "I spent a lot of time with them asking questions about Rutgers, how they have fun, and what they do around campus to keep themselves busy.

"I got to hang out with K.J. (Gray), Drew, Mike (Tverdov), Julius (Turner). I talked to Sebastian (Joseph) a little bit. It was nice just to be able to talk to them about what they do, how they contribute to the team. And, like I said, how they keep themselves busy and out of trouble even though football's over."

first-team all-state selection and Non-public Group 3 champion in 2017, Banks also got a lot out of his conversations with fellow visitor Avery young, who's already committed to the Scarlet Knights.

"I was talking with Avery a lot - talking about his offers, why he committed and stuff like that," said Banks, who also spent much of his time with Daevon Robinson. "It wasn't really recruiting; it was just like why did you pick Rutgers. You had a bunch of offers. I just wanted to see his point of view.

"It made me think, feel more comfortable."

But did it help catapult Rutgers beyond Temple, the perceived favorite coming into the weekend?

"Everything's like eye to eye," he said. "I've got to talk to my family about making a final decision."

A Boston College decommit, Banks says he has yet to commit again - even silently - and is unsure when he will. But Chris Ash made sure that whenever he does, Banks will have a tough time passing on Rutgers.

"I interacted with coach Ash a lot," he said. "With the ceremony for the seniors, going out to eat, going to his house. He invited us into to his home, so he feels comfortable with me.

"There was a lot of interaction with the head coach, and the position coaches. But I got to talk to everybody. No one was shy. Everybody was talking. The running backs coach was talking to me, the cornerbacks coach. It was a whole big deal."

However, the Temple staff won't make things easy, as they are also positioned well, following Bank's Philly official visit one week ago.

"They are always high energy, coaches laughing and giggling," Banks said of his Temple trek. "Same thing there. I talked to a lot of different position coaches, not just my position coach. Not just (head) coach (Geoff) Collins. I was taking to the players, most of the recruits. It was just a good vibe all-around for both visits."
